Summary/Abstract: The present article points out the main controversies and misunderstandings regarding linguistic and cultural mediation, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, emphasizes some of the most important intercultural communication competencies the mediator needs in order to make exchange and negociation possible, impartial and efficient to the benefit of all the parties involved. The article argues that, even though interrelated, what differentiates the linguistic and cultural mediator from the interpreter is the additional intercultural competencies the former needs in order to be able to facilitate cultural adaptation, to help individuals adjust and diminish the fellings of culture shock, to overpass social and cultural barriers or to prevent cultural estrangement.
