Summary/Abstract: The article presents several principles used in biological conservation (by protected natural areas) that serve as sources of inspiration for the conservation of architectural heritage. Under the influence of the Club of Rome and its “zero growth” theory, the idea of conservation was seen as strict preservation or keeping, in an intact state, incompatible with development and yet utopian. The new view acts for maintenance in a "favourable state" that allows development and does not affect the sustaining capacity of ecological systems. The principles examined in the study are functional conservation (within carrying capacities) allowing progressive management of conservation activities, the choice of representative buildings to be protected, the involvement of local communities and international support. The central idea of the article is that the support of the local community is very important for conservation. In this context, the principles of biological conservation – functional conservation, differentiated management, representativeness, local and international support, internal zoning, national and international cooperation – are also applicable to the conservation of architectural heritage.
