Summary/Abstract: In the history of modern Slovakia, the latter half of the 1960s (then part of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic – the CSSR) is associated with political liberation, its climax being the so-called Prague Spring (1967–1968). Hopes for the democratisation of society were dashed by the allied troops of the Warsaw Pact invading Czechoslovakia in August 1968, which overturned the efforts at introducing political and social reforms and resulted in a retrograde process known as normalisation. The present study focuses on the impact of the turbulent atmosphere at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s on Slovak opera production and staging practice.
