Summary/Abstract: Early career researchers are attracted to academia by the hope of freedom, meaningful work and the opportunity for continuous learning. Based on the experiences described in different national and professional contexts, publication expectations are a central element to which resistance is not an answer, yet adaptation is not an easy solution in light of the motivations for choosing this career. In this article, we look for an answer to whether and in what form a sustainable research and publication practice by early career academics is feasible, and which of these are those that the organization recognizes as successful. Our research has succeeded in formulating research and publication strategies that go beyond the simplified duality of resistance or adaptation, yet at the individual level they remain unsustainable and require a change in organizational culture.
