Summary/Abstract: Publications in the social sciences are becoming increasingly similar. The purpose of our paper is to examine this trend and explore its causes and consequences. We use the macro-institutionalist approach of institutional theory as a theoretical framework. In our extensive experience, editors and reviewers of scientific articles strive to ensure that papers meet the same formal standards and thereby also work towards unification in terms of content, logic, and structure. These editorial aspirations are particularly reinforced by the fact that the criteria of being scientific seem objective, even though, from the perspective of institutional theory, these criteria are social constructs of the scientific community. We may consider that some of the requirements of editors and reviewers are no more than myths of being scientific that contribute to the isomorphism of publications.
