Summary/Abstract: This paper interprets the relation of contemporary humans to knowledge as shaped by a consumer attitude. Its central elements are: user mindset, need-satisfying attitude, acquiring mentality, expectation assertiveness, and choice preference. I show how these features are manifest in the prevailing cognitive behaviour. My analysis aims to shed new light on a number of phenomena that are usually understood to be linked with the growing general distrust in, and alienation from, science. I outline the contradiction between this attitude and the still dominant normative ideal of knowledge. Finally, I examine what conceptual directions for constructive solutions are suggested by the framework of this study.
