Summary/Abstract: The study focuses on the issue of the acquisition of words with etymological spelling in primary education. In the introduction, we define the spelling principles of the Slovak language, problematic points in teaching, linguodidactic background, and the process of spelling acquisition. The second part of the study focuses on the interpretation of the results of a survey aimed at finding out to what extent pupils in grades 2-5 have acquired the meaning of some words with etymological spellings due to their low frequency in spoken/written language. The results of the analysis show that some words with etymological spellings are present in the core set of selected words despite a very low level of acquisition of their meaning. On the basis of the survey, we are considering removing them from the set of selected words acquired in 3th grade of primary school.
