Summary/Abstract: Several measures were implemented in September 2015, to protect the cycles of frescoes painted by Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770), and preserved inside the Gallery of the Diocesan Museum in Udine, Italy. A multidisciplinary study was conducted to assess the preventive conservation measures in the Gallery, a room of 70 m2 located at the first floor in the northwestern wing in the Archbishop`s Palace, established before the Tiepolo’s frescoes were shown again after decades to visitors under natural light conditions. The results achieved from the extensive monitoring campaign allow to recognize the effect of two main disturbing factors since the opening of the Gallery to the public after the conservation intervention, i.e. the effects induced by the daylight and the visitor presence. The understanding from data analysis and discussion from simulation results of both these two aspects allow to conclude if these new environmental conditions (i.e. a new “zero status”) are good enough for the preservation of these unique frescoes. Future comparison (obtained with the same instruments/ methods) of data analysis with the “zero status” indicators (e.g. environmental parameters, moisture content, air exchange rate, deposition loss rate, deposition velocity, particulate matter concentration, surface thermal gradients) presented in this paper, will inform the museum staff on better or worse conditions for the conservation of the Tiepolo’s frescoes allowing to set up adaptive/ corrective interventions to improve the situation year after year.
