Summary/Abstract: The historical perception of Gorbachevism in Romania has two fundamental sources. The first is related to the comparison with Romanian ”ceaușism”, and the second to the way the Soviet leader was perceived in the West. Both lose sight not only of Gorbachev's inconsistencies, but especially of his points of interference with the more conservative Soviet traditions. Viewed as a tactical rollback of communism and as a way to refresh the imperial contract between the Russians and the other nations of the Soviet Union, the Gorbachev period looks more like a grandiose diversion than a genuine effort to democratize a system built on the idea of denying liberal democracy
