Summary/Abstract: The paper considers, first of all, the terminological diferentiation: necrolog/obituary/faire-part, „mortuary announcement”, „notification of death”, „commemorative announcement”, „epitaph” and other textual forms. Secondly, the obituary exists as an established editorial genre and has certain formal, visual (graphic) and content rigors. Instead, in the Romanian press, there is a confusion between the obituary and other forms associated with the funeral; some examples are eloquent in this regard. The analysis of the graphic elements and the stereotypical rhetoric in these texts warn the reader about the religious component, about the ethical element, but there is also a patriotic (nationalist) component in the funeral texts published in the newspaper „Românul” (at the level of 1911, for example), because it insists on the civic/social value of the personality of the deceased. Thirdly, the multidisciplinary analysis of the discussed phenomenon points out: the way in which the virtual space adapts to it (foreign specialized sites for obituaries as a composition or as a publication; keeping a Facebook account and for the deceased); the financial component in printing or posting the obituary; the contemporary artistic valences of the phenomenon.
