Summary/Abstract: The development of communicative competence is one of the basic goals of mother tongue teaching, and communication competence includes training for the practical use of language, communication practice and pragmatic approach to language contents. The functional-linguistic approach in teaching the Bosnian language enables the development of students’ expressive communicative skills, written and oral communication in everyday communication situations, and enables them to improve functional literacy. This paper is based on research conducted in primary and secondary schools in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina about the problems and difficulties in teaching the mother tongue and literature and the attitudes of teachers about how to improve the teaching process related to language expression. The conclusions point to the importance of the communication aspect in teaching language contents, improving oral expression, rhetorical skills and verbal fluency of students. The attitudes of teachers who are directly involved in the process of teaching the Bosnian language and literature significantly indicate the importance of more frequent oral exercises in teaching and the development of practical speaking skills. Modern learning and teaching processes require the acquisition of basic knowledge and skills, the ability to observe, critical thinking, judgment, logical reasoning, the ability to actively participate in a democratic society, experiential and lifelong learning, in the spirit of true moral values. Therefore, the communicative-functional approach to teaching is the most appropriate for the modern concept of teaching Bosnian because it focuses on the student, their cognitive abilities, emotions and behavior. Language contents should be presented in the form of a communication situation appropriate to the cognitive and emotional abilities of students and the focus should be on oral and written communication that encourages individuality, creativity, independence as well as maximum engagement of both students and teachers.
