Summary/Abstract: This article defines the development of travel and tourism and provides the historical context that give rise to the use of tourism as a development tool. The impacts of tourism are discussed, and sustainability is introduced as a method for minimizing the negative impacts. As a contemporary phenomenon overtourism is a new vision to understand what is happening in traditional touristic destinations because of increasing of tourism and its impact on infrastructures and facilities. It reflects challenges of managing growing tourism flows into destinations and the impact of tourism on cities and its residents. This study provides a systematic literature review about how the travel and tourism industry are changing and developing in the world and how overtourism impacts sustainability in the destinations.
