Summary/Abstract: The main aim of the proposed paper is to reveal the interrelationship between migration and labour during the 19th century. Bulgarian migrants’ experience in the Danubian Principalities/Romania has been used as a laboratory for different kind of research analyses. The current paper pays attention to different kinds of migrations (seasonal, border, temporary and permanent migrations) and migrant-labourers (merchant-entrepreneurs, craftsmen, unskilled labourers, peasants, market-gardeners). It looks into the reasons for migration and the patterns of migration and settlement, while presenting the main occupations of the settlers. It sheds light on the policy of the authorities regarding the migrants. In doing so, the research is based on concepts and methods coming from migration theory and history, economic/business and social history (labour history).
