Summary/Abstract: In the paper an attempt is made to uncover the significance and the reasons for the detachment of some crafts' centres in Bulgarian traditional folk culture. The local-regional phenomena are examined on the basis of purposeful human activity. The analysis shows that the artistic symbolism between arts and material production, typical for the crafts in the period of Renaissance, is clearly manifested even in the contemporary modified Bulgarian folk culture. In this culture the crafts labour has both the functions of folk art (in a broader sense) and of material production, which according to the social division of labour is subdivided into home-crafts, crafts made to order and market crafts. In the context of folk culture the market crafts exist only as a small ware production for the local market, and the personal contact between the producer and the consumer is preserved. This basic mechanism of production and consummation of craft products in the development of traditional cultures is especially vital in Bulgarian folk culture even in the Renaissance period. It is the basis on which local-regional phenomena are established in Bulgarian traditional crafts, and the process depends on natural environment, local cultural heritage, demographic changes, external influence, patriarchal tradition, personal creative abilities of artizans, confessional differences, increasing influence of urban culture, etc. Local-regional phenomena in the development of Bulgarian traditional crafts in the Renaissance period do not contradict to the national unity of Bulgarian people. Being local trends or modifications of the developing unified Bulgarian national culture, they contribute for its richness and vitality.
