Conventional Use of Color Names in Everyday Language and Literary Polish Language

Summary/Abstract: We have to do with the conventional use of names of colors when the attribute of a referent is not consistent with the reality or arouses some semantic doubts. The inconsistency with the actual fact results from the simplifi cation of the world image through contrastive combination of color names: black and white man, white and red wine. It can also be the result of literary convention: purple or coral-red lips (when talking about lips without lipstick). Semantic doubts arouse in names formed from referents present in different colors: nut-brown, hazel eyes, olive complexion, olive dress. Trans. A. Gierba
