Summary/Abstract: Archaic words are defined as words that have fallen out of use today. The use of archaic words can be found in village dialects and minstrel narratives as well as in other Turkish dialects. Archaic elements are remenants of an ancient belief systems that exists in language and some practices. It is possible to come across archaic expressions and elements in the minstrel art, which is important branch of intangible cultural heritage. These expressions and elements are a very important source for oral tradition. Because it contains the social and cultural codes of nations. Although we witness the weakening of the oral tradition today, wandering minstrels performed important cultural functions in ancient times. The lover who tells the story has carried all the elements of the oral tradition in his essence and kept them alive. The minstrel who uses proverbs, idioms, applause and mess, has enriched and strengthened his expression with these elements. We come across many archaic words and expressions in the epics told by minstrels in Azerbaijan and Iran. We see the use of the word “budun” used in Old Turkish in contemporary minstrel narratives. For example; The word "budun", which is used in the phrase "Ölürem ay budun", was used in a single function in the story records compiled in the field of Azerbaijan. In other fields, instead of this expression pattern, we see "Ölürem ay elim" and "ölürem ay eller". In addition to this, we can find traces of the old shamanic belief in the archaic expressions of "let me get around" and "let me get the gadan" used by the minstrels. It is noteworthy that these expressions are mostly used among Tabriz-Montenegro minstrels. For this reason, in our study, we will focus on the archaic word “budun” and other archaic expressions after giving examples of proverbs, idioms, applause and mess in the minstrel epics compiled from the Iranian field.
