Summary/Abstract: Dubravka Ugrešić describes in both her novels, The Museum of Unconditional Surrender and The Ministry of Pain, a new perspective regarding the concept called exile. This term is portrayed as an experience which has the role to mark the characters’ initiatory road to maturity from all points of view. The connection between the characters and their homeland remains untouched with the help of yugo-nostalgy, which can be described as the attachment towards a country that does not exist nowadays. The characters’ identity is placed under the sign of the doubt from the moment in which they arrive in an unknown territory and the only solution to rediscover themselves and to reconfigure the mental image of Yugoslavia is to find relief in their memories.
