Summary/Abstract: The paper presents a clear comparison of how the direct financing of churches and religious societies has been regulated in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic since their independence in 1993. It starts with a recapitulation of the common legal basis from the Czechoslovak era, describes the international legal obligations of both states in this area, and briefly analyses the new legislation on direct state financing of churches and religious societies, first in the Czech Republic and then in the Slovak Republic. In a rather longer conclusion, the comparison itself is presented, including a final evaluation.
