Summary/Abstract: The heroic song “Marco becomes best groomsman to his sworn brother Bello” (239 variants) belongs to the broader epic plot theme “Return of the stolen (abducted) wife”. In the Eastern Bulgarian records the wife of the hero (Marko) secretly escapes with his best friend (brother) Belyo (Velyo), and the unsuspecting Marko becomes groomsman on their wedding (114 var.). Recognizing the deception, he returns his wife and thus reaffirms (renews, continues) his marriage. The author presents his thesis of early origin, in which the destruction and restoration of marriage follow the cosmological model for describing calendar transitions through the mytho-ritual “social code“ as a wedding.
