Summary/Abstract: The study focuses on two main points: 1) determining the significance of the knowledge of style formed in previous eras not only in the context of musical art, but also in other arts for Guido Adler’s conception of style and 2) investigating the role of the scientific views already adopted by the researcher as a foundation for the author’s research in the field of stylistic issues. In Adler’s understanding, there are certain key concepts (stylus, musical style, national style, individual style) that received recognition in previous stages and which Adler makes reference to, complementing or presenting them in a new light. The influence of Gottfried Semper’s views on Adler’s vision of style gets explored, which can be traced back to his original definition of style. The reception of Adler’s scientific views (set forth in his article “Scope, Method and Aim of Musicology”) is traced in the conception of style built by him with an emphasis on the methodology of scientific research. In the context of “Style in Music”, the classification of musicology proposed by Adler is significant for several reasons: 1) the use of the “arsenal” of each separate branch of musicology as well as the auxiliary disciplines adjacent to it, which aims to maximally elucidate Adler’s view of musical style and 2) as a demonstration of applying methods of musical research defined by Adler and their functioning within the scope of scientific activity. Based on the analysis of the methodology Adler used in “Style in Music”, there stands out the tendency for research to be conducted by a combined historical-systematic method.
