Summary/Abstract: Icchak Schiper (b. 1884), a renowned student of the economic history of Polish Jewry, was confined to the Warsaw ghetto during the Nazi occupation of Poland. He joined in the activities of a welfare organization operating under the name of Jewish Social Self-Aid. He headed the Warsaw Poviat Jewish Welfare Committee, whose activity embraced 12 localities situated in Warsaw’s eastern suburbs. The situation of the Jews in those small towns was very difficult, they were confined to overcrowded ghettos and deprived of means of subsistence. In addition, a considerable number of Jews from western parts of Poland were resettled to these towns. Notwithstanding Schiper’s efforts, the committee led by him was not capable of providing effective assistance to them due to the lack of funds. In 1943, Schiper was taken to Majdanek concentration camp, where he died.
