The Construction of a Student Dormitory in Warsaw and its Place in the History of the Warsaw Religious Community

Summary/Abstract: After World War I, the Jewish community in Warsaw was led by the board elected in 1910, subsequently enlarged through co-opting additional members. Representatives of two camps, the assimilators and the Orthodox Jews, sat on the board. In 1923, the leadership of the community passed a decision on leasing a plot owned by the community for the purposes of building a dormitory for Jewish students of Warsaw’s higher schools. Orthodox Jews protested against this decision, arguing that the dormitory would be too close to the synagogue. On 25 November 1923, during unrest, Orthodox Jews demolished the premises of the Jewish community. Compromise was subsequently reached and the dormitory built at another location, on a plot specifically purchased for this purpose. Construction was completed in 1926. However, disputes over its bylaws continued between the students and the Orthodox community.
