Summary/Abstract: The historical trajectory of Western Christianity, from the founding of Roman Church to present day, was greatly influenced by specific circumstances in Western Europe and the fact that the most important and most respected Christian community was founded in Empire’s capital – Rome. In its relations with the East, i.e. with Orthodox Constantinople and other ancient patriarchates, Rome had played an inevitable role in creating the situation that largely shaped ecclesial reality. It is precisely these relations that formed the teachings of Roman curia about the place of Roman Catholic Church in the world. After the Great Schism, this same teaching was further developed. The Reformation, as a rebellion against formal doctrine of Roman Catholic Church, has deepened the relations in which the unquestionable leadership of Roman curia in the West was refuted, along with Church’s other pretensions on the global scale.
