KAPADOKYA’DA “ÇARMIHTA İSA” SAHNELERİNDEKİ ÜNİK FİGÜR VE UNSURLAR
THE UNIQUE FIGURES AND ELEMENTS IN THE “CRUCIFIXION” SCENE IN CAPPADOCIA

Summary/Abstract: The scene of Jesus on the Cross, which is in the feast scenes is frequently depicted in the Byzantine art. In the center of this scene is the crucifixion of Jesus. Around Jesus there are figures who are witnesses of the event in theology. On both sides of the cross are Longinos and Esopos, which are depicted in smaller sizes than other figures. To the left of the scene, the Virgin and/or the Myrophoroies are depicted. On the other side there are a depictions of John the Evangelist, and the a Centurion who saying, "He was truly the son of God!” (Matthew 27:54) In some churches, this scene ends with the Gestas and Dismas. Apart from the stylistic changes, there are some examples in the iconography that are not included in theology. In the Bahattin Samanlığı Church, there is a personification of Ekklesia that fills a chalice with blood and water flowing from the Jesus' wound. In the Çavuşin Nikephoros Phokas Church (Pigeon Church), Apsotle Peter is depicted with the Virgin Mary and John the Evangelist. This depiction is associated with the drama of “Christos Paschon”. In the Pürenli Seki and the Kokar Church, there is a depiction of Caiaphas in the Crucifixion scene. The reason for this is that the high priest is held responsible for Jesus' death, even though it was Pilate who made the decision to Christ’s death. Morever, there is a temple depiction in the Tokalı New Church, which is included in theology that is not common in Byzantine painting.
