Summary/Abstract: The present article comes with a reconstruction of the ethno-cultural image of the Cahul settlement over time. In addition to the native population, ethnic groups such as Bulgarians, Jews, Greeks, Germans, Armenians, etc. contributed to the development of the town. Restoring the evolution of the ethnic picture of the city of Cahul will reveal some aspects related to the contribution to the socio-economic and cultural development of the locality. The authors trace how political powers can influence the course of development of economic elites in a region. The influences are not only limited to the economic field, great changes also occur on the ethnic palette. From the materials of the researcher I. Gumenai, around 1860, we know that in Cahul conty lived: 26,313 Romanians, 4,367 Slavs, 1,721 Jews, 431 Greeks, 99 Germans, 58 Armenians and 38 Italians. Analyzing the statistical data from 1930, significant changes are observed in the ethnic composition of the population of the city of Cahul.
