Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the complexity of assessing the state of degradation of the mural painting inside the church of the Assumption in Căușeni and the need for a multidisciplinary approach to research, in order to obtain a clear picture of the state of conservation. The identified microorganisms, which have developed on the surface or in the depth of the pictorial layer, are bacteria and fungi. The predominant type of microorganism depends on the chemical composition of the substrate, temperature and humidity, factors that enhance their development. Microorganisms produce chemical changes over time so that the affected surface loses its integrity through cohesive changes and chromatic changes (aesthetic changes) take place. Thus the fungal hyphae/actinomycetes penetrate through cracks causing them to widen. Both the numerical distribution and the taxonomic affiliation of biodeteriogens on the frescoes inside the church in Căușeni are different depending on the available nutrients (Aspergillus niger, Fusarium sp, Penicillium and Actinomyces sp. bacteria).
