Summary/Abstract: The adoption of the green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication as one of the two themes for Rio+20 focused international attention and provided the catalyst for new partnerships, consultations and collaborative research that led to the publication of a significant volume of literature. Although interest in the Green Economy has grown steadily and many definitions have been proposed for this concept, a consensual and concrete definition is still missing, the concept remains controversial due to theoretical vagueness and conceptual ambiguities. Thus, the paper aims to make a synthesis of the existing definitions, to analyze the conceptual differences and to present the importance of the green economy in the context of sustainable development. Also, the paper aims to highlight the main initiatives at the European level for the promotion of the green economy, as well as to analyze the national context regarding the implementation and promotion of the green economy in the Republic of Moldova. The methodology is based on methods of analysis and synthesis, interpretation and relevant comparisons. The results of the research highlight the fact that although Moldova has undertaken various actions to promote the green economy, their implementation remains very limited. The paper also presents some relevant results of the study carried out by the author among consumers regarding their perception of sustainability and ecological products, which helps to better understand the context and conditions for the promotion and development of the green economy, from the perspective of consumers.
