THE WATER MILLS AT THE VILLAGE SORGUN OF ERDEMLI

Summary/Abstract: This study focuses on the water mills located at the village Sorgun in Erdemli. Being situated 35 kilometers west from the city center of Mersin, Erdemli is surrounded with Mediterranean Sea in south and Taurus Mountains in north. The village Sorgun has been founded on one of the upper plains at Taurus Mountains. Any data related with the emergence of the village is not available. Any recording on the village cannot be detected in archival scannings, too. Only data about dating the village seems to be the mosque dated to 1848. This reveals that the village was founded before this point. There are many springs in the village, which has a favorable geography for agriculture. Thus, the local economy depends on orcharding and vegetable gardening. The existence of springs in large quantities has enabled the water mills to be built. In surveys, totally six water mills have been detected at the village Sorgun. One of these is located at the village Toros, which was a district of the village Sorgun till 1994, but since then has been a separate village. This edifice has been included into the study as it was within the boundaries of the village Sorgun at the date it was constructed. Three of six water mills to have been detected are totally collapsed. The other three buildings are desolate and about to be collapsed. The main objective by this study is to document the water mills the remnants and traces of which can be observed and to draw the attention of scientific circles to these edifices.
