The Functional Feature of Euphemisms in the Diplomatic Language

Summary/Abstract: Nowadays, the challenges that the diplomatic world has to overcome are diverse and difficult to manage. Since the primary purpose of diplomacy is to reach agreement by softly overcoming disagreement, the use of euphemisms is of paramount importance. This article focuses to observe the way the diplomatic language function by means of euphemisms and to highlight their efficiency. Language is not a simple tool of conveying meaning by itself. The meaning should be decoded according to the context, the needs and interests of the sender involved in the process of communication and its various ways of perceptions. Thus, the role of euphemisms is to convey, besides the meaning of the message, perceived ad litteram, the attitude of the sender towards the receiver in order to mitigate the impact that the message would have on them.
