Summary/Abstract: The subject of the article is issues of the theory of notion metaphors, one of prototype, standard theories of contemporary cognitive semantics. The author analyzes the position of cognitive linguistics in the system of historically variable language studies regarding criteria of language philosophy (he views the theory of notion metaphors as a contemporary version of philosophical realism). According to cognitive researchers, metaphor is: (1) a system phenomenon (belonging to “langue”), (2) a virtual phenomenon (not dynamic), (3) a diachronic one, (4) a phenomenological one and (5) a phenomenon belonging to the area of mental representation. The author denies cognitive and the so-called modular function of metaphoric projections (O. Jakel’s model postulate in particular), since any realization of notion metaphors is always set up in a certain communicative context, thus depending on such factors as: situation, mnemonic, ergonomic, social-cultural, historical etc., which are usually ignored in cognitive linguistic studies. According to the author of the article, the principle of extrapolation is the communicative rule in which notion metaphors function, psychologically based on anaxiomatization mechanism.
