Summary/Abstract: Family life has been legislated by two entities that coordinated and became involved in 18th Century society – State and Church. This collaboration continued until the 19th Century, and beginning with the French Revolution the Church was subordinated by the State, even in matters of matrimonial law. This up date through secularization had significant consequences on society’s attitude towards marriage and traditional family. These changes were felt in the majority of the European countries but were more pronounced in the second half of the 19th century. All the structures of the society, including the family, were marked by numerous changes from a legal point of view.
