Summary/Abstract: As Lotman points out, the most interesting things happen at the border. One of the most fascinating boundaries, not only in his theoretical conception of the “semiosphere”, but also in general, for making sense of man's place in the world, is the boundary between physical and cultural space. It is at this boundary that our understanding of landscape lies. The term divides its meaning between the surrounding world and man, nature and its culture, the macrocosm and the microcosm. But it crosses, as we shall see, other boundaries too.
