Summary/Abstract: After the end of the Second World War, a long process of rebuilding Elbląg and social consolidation of the population arriving from different parts of Poland began. The Roman Catholic Church, specifically the Old Town parish of St. Nicholas and the Elblag clergy, played an important role in this process. The rebuilding of the churches in Elbląg and the organisation of pastoral life in the city after 1945 took place under conditions of increasing hostility and persecution on the part of the communist authorities. In this situation, two visits by Primate Stefan Wyszyński to post-war Elbląg, in 1950 and 1958, were of enormous social and religious significance, patriotic and bond-building among Elbląg’s Catholics.
