Summary/Abstract: The article examines the social situation and social work with mentally ill individuals during the period of early Christianity. The processes of relations towards this group in the Roman society and the early Christian community have been analytically traced, and main conflicts in the two moral-value systems have been highlighted. The main views on therapy and treatment of the mentally ill are presented, as well as the society's attitude towards their problems. It is concluded that the representatives of this group are placed in social isolation and discrimination against the other individuals.
