Summary/Abstract: István Fischer was a Transylvanian documentary filmmaker, born as a Hungarian-Jewish minority in 1936, who emigrated to Germany (then: West Germany) in the seventies. Throughout his fruitful career, Fischer has constantly reflected the minority identity in his work – how minorities identify themselves during the harsh challenges of the 20th century. In this study, I will analyse Fischer’s portrait documentaries from different TV stations and different eras, showing how Fischer’s subjects encapsulate distinctive forms of the so-called minority identity.
