Summary/Abstract: The present paper examines the phenomenon of substantiation, as a result of which the adjective or participle ceases to name a feature, and acquires the meaning of a object. Several Old Bulgarian written monuments were studied, in which numerous cases of independently used adjectives/participles in different degrees of substantiation were found – some of which were used both as adjectives and as nouns, while others have already passed into the category of nouns and acquired the independent meaning of a substantive.
