RARE ADJECTIVES IN THE OLD BULGARIAN TRANSLATION OF ST. CYRIL OF JERUSALEM’S CATHECHISM (GIM, Syn. 478)

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the adjective hapaxes in the Old Bulgarian translation of St. Cyril of Jerusalem’s (GIM, Syn.478). Highlighting the vocabulary specific to the closed tradition of Old Bulgarian translation of the early Christian work is accompanied by tracking the stratigraphy of the excerpted material in comparison with the data from the classical Old Bulgarian works and from the later transcriptions of Preslav written works, with differentiation of the specific structural word-formation models and types. It is concluded that the idiolect of the Old Bulgarian scholar reflects the following of two literary linguistic tendencies both in the use of adjectives as vocabulary units and in the purposeful usage of adjectival derivational models. The superimposition of the Cyril-Methodiev’s and the Preslav norm largely refers to the Konstantin Preslav’s practice as a bright representative of the so-called two-erova Preslav school, illustrating the unity of the Old Bulgarian literary language.
