Summary/Abstract: In her critical reflection on Polish subaltern studies on Polish-Ukrainian relationsGlinianowicz draws attention to the Ruthenian/Ukrainian comprador elites who competedwith the Polish nobility for knowledge/power over the Ruthenian peasantry. She thenanalyses the portrayal of peasants in prose by representatives of these elites in Galiciafrom the 1860s to the 1880s. Drawing on Foucault’s theory of sexuality Glinianowiczexamines the peasantry’s emancipation and their inclusion by the Ruthenian/Ukrainianelites into the intimate and political space of society. The paper reveals the elites’ decisiverole in constructing modern Ukrainian identity, the ideological game of peasant sexuality, and it also deconstructs the foundations of the enduing stereotype of the rustic characterof Ukrainian culture.
