Summary/Abstract: Depressive disorders commonly co-occur with substance use disorders. In this article, different types of relationship between depression and substance use disorders are reviewed. For example, some research studies show that depressive disorder is a predictor for substance use disorder and precede the substance abuse. According to other researchers however, depressive disorders induced by substance use/abuse. Third explanatory model insists that there’s no causal relationship between these two types of disorders and that they both are rather caused by some „third“ factor. Lastly, it is highly recommended more prospective investigations of relationships between depression and substance use disorders to be done, in order to improve prevention and therapy of these disorders.
