Influence of the perceived parenting style on the empathic levels of university students

Summary/Abstract: The article presents a study of the influence of parenting style on the empathy levels among 194 undergraduate students in Bulgaria. The overall parenting style does not affect empathy directly except for maternal care, whose influence is significant, but weak. Personal distress is affected by paternal care and paternal overprotection but this influence is also weak. The parental variables, along with gender and fi eld of study do affect the results in the low empathy group, but they do not affect the results in the high-empathy group.
