Summary/Abstract: This article considers, with the involvement of archival materials introduced into scientific use for the first time, an unknown fact with S.F. Platonov’s unfinished review of the book by V.G. Druzhinin, which originated from his master’s thesis. S.F. Platonov, a friend of V.G. Druzhinin, promised Academician L.N. Maykov to write a review of this study. S.F. Platonov and V.G. Druzhinin became acquainted during their university days, and it grew into a strong friendship, both personal and between their families. This bond lasted over their lifetime. They were among a group of young researchers who founded the well-known “circle of Russian historians”. In 1889, V.G. Druzhinin defended his master’s thesis, and S.F. Platonov took part in the debate as a second opponent. L.N. Maykov’s letter casts light upon the morale of S.F. Platonov on the eve of the defense. The latter was also working on the manuscript with a review at that moment. The work progressed slowly and then stalled. The reason for this was explained in the abovementioned letter, which is thus of great value due to the information that it contains. The rather voluminous manuscript by S.F. Platonov reviews the key literature on the topic, asserts original judgments on the use of historical sources. It is concluded that V.G. Druzhinin’s work has not yet received a fair and reasoned assessment in the scientific literature, except perhaps for an attempt made by S.F. Platonov. Of special interest are archival materials provided here.
