Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of 1957, the authorities in communist Poland started to implement the process of secularization of social life and atheization of society. One of the elements of this process was the campaign to remove religious symbols from schools, introduced in September 1958. The communist authorities had been preparing to carry out this plan from July 1958 and the manner of performing the removal of crucifixes and crosses was the subject of many meetings of the active membership of the Polish United Worker’s Party (PZPR), educational workers and the media. The article focuses on the process of preparing for the implementation of the campaign to remove crucifixes and crosses, its trajectory within the borders of Opole Voivodeship, and also the reaction of society to these events.
