Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of the subject and its realization in the information structure of the Bulgarian simple declarative sentences in the written language. The main problems which this paper will make attempt to investigate, are how the pragmatic roles topic and focus are mapped on the subject, and what factors determine the distinction/realization of the pragmatic roles of the subject. For the purpose of the analysis, we will examine the interface of syntactic structure (word order) of the sentence, formal features of the subject noun in relation to the category of definiteness, and information structure of the sentence.
