Summary/Abstract: This article explores the connection between the Japanese writing systemsand shodō calligraphy. As the writing system gradually evolved, so did the art of writing, the two remaining in a constant dialogue. This phenomenon allowed shodō to differentiate itself fromother types of calligraphy, creating a unique form of art through which the calligrapher can freely express their feelings and thoughts. In order to showcase this connection, the article analyses the typology of shodō works based on the writing system used and their particularities. Ultimately, aiming to illustrate these aspects, a calligraphic work created by the contemporary Romanian calligrapher Rodica Frențiu hasbeen analysed.
