Summary/Abstract: The analysis of the traces left by tools and their transformation into a source of information is a first in Romania, aimed at completing and providing new clues about the tools and working techniques used by ancient Roman stonemasons. The present article discusses the way in which lithic elements in ancient buildings and pieces were processed, by analysing the archaeological artefacts found at Apulum. In conclusion, this study aimed to transform stone from a building material or work of art into a research object and an important source of information. Artefacts well preserved in the ground can provide new information, it just needs thorough research and knowledge of the tools and the traces traced by them. The tools used by the craftsmen have largely retained their shape and usefulness to the present day, and by comparison and by looking at a few distinguishing features it is easy to identify the tools used, the size and shape of the cutting head or what they were used for.
