Summary/Abstract: The article refers to the ceremony that took place at the parish church in Sztutowo on September 2, 1979. During a solemn religious ceremony, the monument commemorating the 40th anniversary of the first transport of prisoners to the camp was unveiled by the founders- community of former Stutthof prisoners and their families. The motto of the monument was a quotation from the first encyclical of Pope John Paul II, and its religious background was the awakening of Polish society caused by the fresh memory of the Holy Father’s first pilgrimage to his Homeland. In the official political and propaganda circulation, PRL authorities of the time did not mention about the ceremony in Sztutowo at all. The monument, unveiled at that time, still stands in Sztutowo.
