The Poznań German Library (1996–2021) as an original editorial project and its contribution to Polish–German relations

Summary/Abstract: Professor Hubert Orłowski decided to establish the Poznan German Library (Poznańska Biblioteka Niemiecka – PBN) book series motivated primarily by the state of knowledge on our western neighbors among Poles in the middle 1990s. Cooperation and integration between Poland and Germany, closer and closer each year, especially after 2004, presented a challenge of getting to know the neighbor (and partner at the same time) better. Orłowski and the editors of the series attempted to avoid concentrating on isolated events from the past, presented without the proper context, and strived to depict how the German national habitus evolved through the centuries. The volumes released within the PBN series can be divided into two groups. The first group consists of works treating of an oeuvre of an individual, the second – of books discussing ranges of issues, discourses, certain problems. Over the last 25 years this valuable editorial initiative became a recognizable brand of its own due to the choice of published texts, contributions of renowned Polish German specialists to the editorial work, richness of content and scholarly value, and a lot of weight attached to carefully refining the formal aspects of each volume. The essential significance of this outstanding editorial project can be summed up to the following statement: Neighbourship of two nations is not only a geographical fact, but also (or maybe above all) an obligation to getting to know each other closer.
