Summary/Abstract: The article provides an account of the building of one of the first Christian churches in ancient Rome – the Basilica of St. John Lateran – up until the year 455. It also presents the process of adapting the building to public use for Christians who came out of hiding after 313, and a description of the first basilica – Basilica Nova – which was used for sacral purposes in ancient Rome. Due to the limited size of the article, it intends to provide a concise presentation of the discussed theme.
