Summary/Abstract: This article briefly summarizes different attempts of periodization and typologization of the historical progress of cultures, beginning from the mythological divisions found in Ancient India and in Antiquity, and finishing with the structural-semiotic studies of the 20th century. Different tendencies and regularities that mold the field of research are discussed, and the question of the place of Juri Lotman's concepts in the research field of cultural typology are also briefly discussed.
