Summary/Abstract: The twenty-first century marks a changing world with convoluted conflict dynamics and intensified disputes in both international as well as internal affairs of states all over the globe. The United Nations, an unmatched anchor in international politics, engages in third-party interventions and supports peaceful dispute settlement under its peacekeeping mandate. As a unique instrument of conflict prevention and resolution, mediation has been a viable option for the UN in this regard. This paper analyses the engagements of the UN as a mediator and its contributions to supporting mediation activities. The research finds that despite the demonstrated satisfactory progress in supporting mediation, its role as a mediator is oftentimes hindered by several political and structural causes within the UN system. Although as a mediator, the UN has preferred to work behind the curtain in the twenty-first century, it has embraced strategic changes and introduced various guidance for facilitating mediation processes.
